America loves violence

How often do you see violence on television?

There is almost always a violent television show on tv. There is violence in movies, video games, and even cartoons for young children. More shows are now adding violence to cartoons because it attracts children and young adults to watch it. It is also teaching children violent acts that they partake in with other children.

There is also a lot of violence in adult television shows. I can think of 5 violent television shows on the top of my head: CSI, Law and Order SVU, NYPD, Cops, and SWAT Dallas. I only put down 5,but there are sub types of shows like CSI New York, and Law and Order.

Not only do you see violence in these created shows, but all you hear on the news now is local and worldwide violence. You hear about beatings, children getting raped, suicide bombers, etc. It is sad how the saying, "If it bleeds, it leads" is very true to Americans.

Advertising for children

There are many different techniques that marketing agents use to market items and products for children.

For example, we learned in nutrition class that grocery stores place the sugary, fattening cereals in reach of young children. Therefore, children will be attracted to that cereal and will hopefully persuade their moms to buy it for them.

They also place little toys and magazines in the checkout aisles for individuals to impulsively buy items that they think they need.

News isn't news anymore

Our television news and commercials have totally changed over the past few years. Local news is not local news anymore since we are now hearing about what the celebrities are doing out in California rather that what is going on in our own backyards.

Also, now commercials are featuring good looking celebrities and professional athletes to sell and rave about their products. For example:  Burger King is now featuring David Beckham to promote their new smoothies.

Another example is Subway promoting their healthy food items to customers since our country is now focusing on the demographical issue of obesity. They promote their new egg white breakfast sandwiches that are on wheat english muffins and their fresh fruit parfaits. In addition, they are now using the athlete Michael Phelps to sell their footlong subway sandwiches as a good source of meat, vegetables, and whole grains.

Technology: Friend or Foe?

Has technology affected our judgement.

Yes, techonology has changed our word demographics in terms of education and jobs. Now, instead of teachers teaching students how to write in print and cursive, they want to teachers to teach children how to type on a keyboard. Also, there are a lack of jobs for individuals due to the way technology now works for us. There are now even robots doing medical procedures in hospitals rather than having trained inviduals do the work in operating rooms.

You can also see the way technology has affected us when you go into any store and give them cash. You can see the cashiers struggling to give money back if their machine is not working because they rely on machines and calculators rather than be able to count up or count back in their minds.

Success

I think we have discussed a lot about what fails in a product. Now, can you have a common list of what it takes for it to be successful? Trying to remember which campaigns I have seen there were only a few things I found they had in common.

One - a Catchy Phrase/Jingle
Like those old verizon commercials with Can You Hear Me Know. Then there was one of the most famous phrase, "Got Milk." (did you know the advertising agency almost shot that idea down. They said it wasn't proper english.) There is also "Just Do It," for Nike, "Have it Your Way," for Burger King, and "Gimme a Break" for the Kit Kat bar.

Two - Portrayed Attitude
They express the correct mood for the certian target market. By this I mean if they product is a cuddly bear then you have a commercial to show off how the bear is cute and snuggly. Think of the Snuggles bear for clothes. You want a super comfortable look and you see Snuggles relaxed in the clothes.

A person can measure success through profits or equations, but I believe sometimes it goes deeper than that.

Sell outs?

One most important thing I have learned from this class is not consider artist who use art for commercials as sell outs. In fact, I think an artistic expression can become really successful in advertising. It is increadibly successful for many serious subjects like above the influence campaign. The logo itself expresses a sign to reach teenagers and convince them they can live a life away from sex and drugs.

Ads that use humor, outrageous acts, and taboo visuals, usually skyrocket to the top of advertising ranking lists and public opinion polls. While effective for their shock value and viral marketing capacity, I feel their long term ability to affect daily decisions is not as strong as other types of ads, but long term impact may not be their purpose. Perhaps the companies only want short spikes in recognition for a promotion or event rather than long term associations.


Think of some of the best commercials you have seen on TV – what made them the best and what made them memorable? Were they funny, innovative, or shocking? Did they tell a story? Did they speak to an experience you personally have felt?

Demographical Mother

I was talking to my mother again to help me come up with more advertising topics. We some how came up with a list of advertising that affected our daily routine. These are a list of campaigns that we had noticed through out one day....

When the hot sizzling days of summer gets you start thinking about that nice cold ice glass of cold beer. Go down to bellies tavern and have a nice cold tap beer for 1.00. The cold refreshing beer will take off the heat of the summer.

Responsible Consumer

Since I became a mother, I now am more concern about my finance. So when I see the words discount, sale, reduced price, I have to check it out. I'm not going to be on the show Extreme Couponing anytime soon but I am more concious on what stuff really costs.

Were are the Jingles?

Music is a marketing strategy to gain the attention of customers since the invention of the radio.  Using music has been thriving because customers hear the song and tag it to the product or service.  One thing that has changed over the years is the music they use on commercials. Promoters do not come up with “jingles” anymore but instead they use chart breaking songs from singers. If you look at these two superbowl commercials as an example, you can distinguish the differences right away. The first is the apple commercial from 1984 Superbowl and the other is last year’s super bowl Chevrolet commercial using We Are Young by Fun. Both are have an inspirational tone to their product. However, does being less creative devalue the work of the advertiser? Is they considered not as creative?

In a way, I would agree recent commercials have lost their “artistic touch.” I miss the originality of jingles like “oh I wish I were an oscar mayor wiener,” “cause it’s J-E-L-L-O,” and “Everybody loves a slinky.” In my opinion, jingles are more pleasing because you don’t have to hear them all the time. Some are actually fun to sing. Unfortunately, as much as I do miss the quirky songs they don’t fit anymore in our society. This does not mean they are less successful. It is just competing in the advertising world you need the most exposure you can get. Every time the song We Are Young comes on the radio, internet, tv shows, a person now thinks of the commercial and visualizes it in their head and it is free for Chevrolet. It would be great if jingles come back to create more jobs but it does not look like they will anytime soon.

Advertising History

During my visit to the Rockies Museum last week, the replica of the painting Napoleon and the Alps reminded me of this class. Public Relations have been around significantly long time.  Napoleon and the Alps is only an example from the of political painting using materials of the time to represent the Emperor of France in a powerful sense. The same sense was used in Obama campaign. I also thought how far promoting goes back. During what most consider the medieval era, churches used portals of judgment for the entrance. They then used a more welcoming and spiritual approach during the Counter Reformation.  Then I remembered emperors of Ancient Rome and Ancient Greece used profiled self portraits on coins, which everyone would use and be reminded who were their leaders. To go back even further is Ancient Egypt. The power of pharaohs used huge monuments to demonstrate their authority. It is hard to believe how much has changed in public relations through out history.

Shackles Cause Shock

Adidas introduces a new line of shoes on facebook that has shackles attached to the back of the shoe that attach to your ankles. The facebook page also features a long line “out a sneaker game so hot you lock your kicks to your kicks to your ankles?” Right after the facebook post more than 2,000 people commented on how and importantly why Adidas was attempting to capitalize on the concepts of slavery. This is especially bad being when you think of basketball players one pictures a young African American man. In defense of the Jeremy Scott of JS Roundhouse mid sneakers, the designer of the shoe said the idea came from a childhood memories of Mickey Mouse and pandas with cuffs. Obviously this design failed to capture a cute and cuddly mental image. How does this kind of product make it this far without anyone raising the slavery question? If in seconds of being released on facebook there were over 2000 comments on how much of a bad idea it was for Adidas.  Was there research? How many members of the Adidas team making large salary to prevent this type of thing to happen? Also, why can’t this just be a new whacky design? Must a basketball show represent slavery? Sometimes I fell like our society like to focus on the bad. With that said this bad publicity is still publicity.

So, I defiantly have not been able to post all my thoughts. So they are all going to be at once. They have been saved up in word documents because I have been too nervous to share my thoughts. I'm just going to post all of them at once like ripping off a band aid.



My first idea about marketing came from a conversation I had with my mom. We actually had a sex talk. Not the kind you talk about when you’re a teenager but one about advertising with a sex appeal. Commercial, magazines, billboards all using beautiful women and men to promote their products. What I had learned from the conversation is the knowledge about advertising. My mother thought it was wrong to use sex appeal. I, on the other hand, know it is a good way to get a response from the customers who are teenagers on up to about 25 year olds.  Education in visual arts is more vital now because our generation uses technology to communicate visually and affects us everyday. My mother might be more understanding if she had taken classes about marketing. This is my first marketing class but art classes have helped me edit and respond to the material in a different way.

My First Blog

I decided to start my first topic reflecting on my first experience in blogging becuase I wanted to get use to the system. It is also a great opportunity to express my opinions about learning to blog. The most difficult part was figuring out how the system works. Lets try posting this paragraph....
